Review: Decadent treats from Sweet T’s Bakeshop
Even though I live in NJ, I have yet to review a bakery in the Garden State! For shame, right? Well, my visit to Sweet T’s Bakeshop finally takes care of that.
Sweet T’s, located in picturesque Haddonfield, is a fairly new bakery that opened in December. Owned and operated by sisters Toni and Chrissy, the bakery offers a unique selection of cupcakes, specialty cakes and other baked goods. You can even swing by in the morning to grab a cup of coffee and a scone (though really, what’s wrong with a cupcake at 8:30 am?)
I selected a variety of cupcakes to bring home and try with Ray, but of course I didn’t get a description of each one ahead of time (Note to self: always, always photograph the cupcake tags in the display case!) While all the cupcakes were memorable (read that as DELICIOUS), I don’t want to describe any incorrectly, so I’ll stick with what I blissfully remember.
To be honest, I don’t get the big deal behind Red Velvet. I’ve had it a few times and it usually just tastes like cake to me. (Please don’t stone me). But I took a chance with this cupcake, and let me tell you, I am so glad that I did. This isn’t just a Blue Velvet cake … instead the moist cake sings with a bright blueberry flavor. The cake is topped with a light cream cheese frosting and a single blueberry, keeping the presentation simple and cute. The Blueberry Velvet is definitely a standout.
Peanut Butter Obsession
I got to enjoy this monster of a cupcake all by myself due to Ray’s peanut allergy, and I’m not sorry that I did. The cupcake (pictured above) is a rich, moist chocolate cake filled with light peanut butter mousse, dipped in chocolate ganache, topped with peanut butter buttercream, drizzled in more ganache and peanut butter sauce and then finally topped with peanut butter cup bits. Whew! What a mouthful! The cupcake is decadent, but doesn’t leave you feeling like you just ate a brick. It definitely gives some other chocolate and peanut butter cupcakes that I’ve had a run for their money and is a must-order for anyone who loves that flavor combo.
Blood Orange Velvet
Another take on the traditional red velvet, this time with blood oranges. Since the Blueberry Velvet was so good, I figured this cupcake would follow suit and it did. Biting into the cake, you’re welcomed by a rich orange color that really pops. The cupcake has a wonderful orange flavor as well, and is filled with whipped cream. Like the Peanut Butter Obsession, this cupcake is dipped in chocolate ganache. It’s frosted in a chocolate blood orange buttercream, then garnished with a candied orange peel. The Blood Orange Velvent is an elegant presentation combined with a real flavor bomb.
So my verdict? Toni and Chrissy at Sweet T’s Bakeshop are two very talented ladies that offer a lot more than just your standard cupcakes. I think their shop will be a boon to the area’s economy and can definitely take on the Philly shops across the water. If you’re in the area, definitely treat yourself to a goodie or two–you’ll thank me later.
